  • Théâtre de la Mezzanine, founded by Denis Chabroullet, explores all the most extravagant scenic possibilities to transport its spectators into immersive, incredibly dense visual and musical worlds, like mirrors of the world's chaos and beauty, of our nightmares and dreams.

After Côte d'Azur and its little universe about to sink, Dido and Aeneas, La Mezzanine's brand new production investigates opera, as a natural continuity with its previous shows which already used all the power of musical language.

But it's not just opera, it's opera reinvented by La Mezzanine! Inspired by Henry Purcell's baroque masterpiece, Denis Chabroullet imagined Carthage like the basement of a riparian old factory. Machines mounted on stilts, seeping water pipes... We're in a renewed tradition of baroque theatre, a theatre of appearances and disappearances, based on illusion, movement and metamorphosis.

Under the musical direction of Jean-Marie Puissant, the choir haunts a ghostly universe, while Dido and Aeneas are diving body and soul into the torments of passion before being caught up by Fate...

    It's totally unclassifiable and a must-see!

    PRESS REVIEWS

Denis Chabroullet's shows are like no others and must absolutely be seen. Aden

For about ten years, Denis Chabroullet has given up words: he tells the world through gigantic universes, and has found his way to be spectacular with a yet very deep sense of DIY. The imagination is wandering, discovering its constructive threads and eventually finding itself dazed and dizzy. You think of Delacroix or Gericault... Chabroullet is a poet of disaster. Les Inrockuptibles

Chabroullet has a knack to give birth to images with metaphors in movement, filled with raw, troubling poetry. Magical enough to make you laugh and smile sometimes, but also disturbing enough to punch you in the stomach... And it feels good! Télérama
